Picking The Right Catfish Rod And Reels

Fishing for catfish has been the favorite of many anglers for years. They were one of the first species of fish to ever be caught as a sport. The catfish can grow to some amazing sizes and they will put up a fight that you will want to talk about for a long time. There is no better feeling than to reel in one or more of these monsters.

The rod and reel are extremely important when it comes to your gear and the amount of success you can have reeling in the catfish. There are certain steps you can follow when picking out the right combination of rod and reels. The first step is to decide which species of catfish you intend to go fishing for. Are you after the channel cat, flathead, blue cat, white cat or the bullhead catfish?

After deciding which species you prefer to catch, you need to learn as much as you can about the different types of rod and reels available. This will help you determine what would work the best for each type of fishing you are trying to do. Of course, if you are new to fishing all together and not sure which species you want to go after, then you should learn what type of catfish live in your immediate area or where you will be going fishing the most.

This way you can focus on buying a rod and reel to match the species of catfish in your area. Later on as you begin to advance your skills you will learn more about the different species of catfish and this will help you decide if you need to change or add to your gear to go fishing for another type of catfish.

Before you can choose the right catfish rod and reel it would be helpful to understand a little about the rod itself. No doubt you have heard much talk about the rod action and power of the rod from other anglers but, do you know what is meant by these terms? Below is a brief description explaining what is meant by the action and power of a fishing rod.

    All about Rod and Reels

When you talk about the action of the rod you are talking about the amount of bend it has. The bend is most noticeable when you are casting your line or reeling in a fish.

Slow Action Rod – This rod will bend all the way down to the handle.
Moderate Action Rod – This one bends over the last portion of the rod.
Moderate-Fast Action Rod – These will bend just over the last third portion of the rod.
Fast Action Rod – The fast action rod bends in the last fourth part of the rod.
Extra-Fast Action Rod – This rod will only bend at the tip.

The bend affects the way you fish because the softer or slow action rods give more. In other words, they have more flexibility. These will hardly ever sling your bait from the hook but they will not cast as far as the fast action rods will. The fast action rods will cast further because they put more force behind your throw giving you a little added power.

    Trotline Fishing For Catfish

Trotline fishing has been around for as long as there have been fishermen needing to feed hungry mouths. A simple guide to trotline fishing will help you to understand how to construct and use a trotline for fishing. A trotline is basically just some type of a long cord or line with a number of fish hooks suspended from it so that when it is strung across water, the hooks dangle below the line.

There are various laws governing the use of trotlines depending on the states in which you intend to use them, and it always pays to know in advance exactly what those laws are. Rarely does the excuse that you ‘didn’t know’ hold much water with the Game and Fish boys, and it can keep you in their good graces if you know and obey their regulations. In many areas, fishermen who are not fishing for commercial purposes may use 25 hooks on a trotline.

One of the best things about fishing with a trotline is that you do not have to stay right with your lines all the time. This is particularly good if you are fishing for the sole purpose of bringing food to your table. You can set out a trotline and leave it while you spend the night at camp, then you can get up in the morning, catch some bait on the way to your lines, when you get there, pull your lines in, rebait them, and have fresh fish for lunch when you get back to camp!

The most common trotline catches are catfish, crappie, and, if you like them, turtle. Just be careful, because some of these turtles are snappers, and sometimes you pull a good sized gar or even a gator out of the water, and you have to be prepared to deal with that situation safely when it happens.

When you are using a trotline, you can go from one side of a channel to the other with your line and hooks. That way, any fish passing through are likely to be able to come into contact with your offering and be tempted into taking a bite. What you do is just bait your hooks and then stretch your line from one side of the channel to the other, tie it off securely to something stationary on each side.

Trotlines will work well in ponds and lakes as well. One thing you have to remember is that you will be getting someone tangled up in your line if you are not careful, so it pays to know the areas in which you plan to set out your trotline, know the regulations in that area, and behave accordingly. If you are putting out your trotline in a lake or pond, you can easily weigh the end down with a brick or something else sufficiently heavy or tie off to a tree. Just remember it will be dark, so you might want to mark the tree to which you are tied, or mark your cord somehow so that you can easily get back to your line in the dark.

Planning a Great Catfish Fishing Trip

Seems like a no brainer, doesn’t it? You just throw your bait and tackle in a bag, grab your interstate map, and hit the road. Actually, a good fishing trip depends more on planning than you might imagine. You can always just hit the road, find a stream somewhere, and stand a good chance of catching something. But, some good planning will make the trip go much smoother, and you’ll enjoy your fishing vacation much more.

    What to Take

First off, make a checklist. I would recommend starting your checklist well before you leave for your trip. Include fishing gear like rods, bait, lures; clothes including boots, gloves and bad weather gear like a poncho; tools for sharpening hooks and little things like that, and whatever else you need to keep yourself comfortable. When you pack, separate all these things in little bags within your big bag, like a small bag for tools, one for fishing gear, etc.

Now, there will always be some little thing you’ll forget. Each time you go on a trip, you’ll end up getting there and smacking yourself on the forehead, saying, “I can’t believe I forgot THAT.” It’s no problem; packing perfectly takes some practice. I guarantee that you won’t forget it next time, and after several catfishing outings, you’ll have packing down to a science.

Before you pack, you’ll also have to think about what fishing method you are going to use. For example, if you plan on wading into streams, you’ll want to take the appropriate clothes and gear. If you’re going to fish at night, don’t forget lights. Whether your chumming, juglining or fly fishing, you’ll need a whole different checklist of gear to take.

    Where to Go

The next question is where to go. Catfish are found in rivers, lakes and ponds all over the United States and well up into Canada. Probably the best catfishing in the country is in the south and mid-west, from as far north as Missouri, Illinois, Michigan and Ohio, and all the way down to the Gulf of Mexico and Texas. You can also find catfish out west and further up north, so it really doesn’t matter where you go. Ask any angler, and they’ll tell you that their neck of the woods is the best, but the fact is, you can catch catfish all over the country. This is one of the things that makes catfishing so great.

You might talk to some friends or folks down at the bait shop and see what they recommend. On the other hand, since catfish are found all over the country, why not just pick a pretty area you want to go anyway, and make that your catfishing trip? I would recommend heading down south, or fishing in the tributaries of major rivers like the Mississippi, Missouri, or Red River of Oklahoma and Arkansas.

What Do You Want To Catch?

Another thing to consider when deciding where to go, is whether you want to catch a bunch of little fish, or a couple of big ones. This might also influence what gear you take. Certain parts of the country are known for having lakes and streams full of tiny catfish that you can catch lots of. In other places, there are giant cats prowling the river bottoms, and you might get lucky and snag one of them to take home. Fishing gear, method and location will be different depending on what you want to catch, so keep this in mind.

    Where to Stay

Next, think about where you are going to stay. Most of us head out on fishing trips, especially long ones, in order to get away from the city, stress, hassles and everyday life. If that’s what you want, you might consider roughing it and camping out somewhere near the fishing spot. The only thing about that is it means taking camping gear too, which means more preparation. On the other hand, you can always stay in an RV or a lodge, sleep at night in some comfort and luxury, and head out to the remote areas to fish when you want to. I wouldn’t say that any way is better; it’s all up to the tastes of the angler. Just keep in mind that after all that time fishing, it might be nice to curl up in a nice warm bed!

Wherever you end up going, leave an itinerary with information giving your whereabouts with somebody. If you plan to explore, or you don’t know exactly where you’ll be, give them as detailed information as possible. Nowadays, we all have cell phones, and that helps keep you safe when you’re out in the wilds. Be sure to take your charger. But one warning: Don’t pick up the phone if it’s a work-related call!

Catfish Fishing Pole Reviews – A Look at Some of the Best

Anglers like to argue and hate to agree about anything. Of course, arguing about what’s the best such and such gives us something to talk about, and everybody’s proud of their own particular choice. Your pole is your most important piece of fishing gear, so it’s something we all get a little passionate about.

Nothing works for everybody, but here is a review of a few of the most popular and high quality fishing rods out there.

Shakespeare Ugly Stik Tiger – Somebody’s Been Here With the Ugly Stik

First off, you might like to know that this is the most popular rod among anglers. People just can’t get enough of the Ugly Stik. This might be because of the quality manufacture of the rod. Ugly Stiks are made with good quality graphite parts, including the core of the rod itself. What this means for the angler is that it can really take a beating. When that giant cat wiggles off your line and swims away to freedom, you can toss that rod into the ground and it won’t break… but we don’t recommend doing that.

For cat fishers, the Ugly Stik is also great because it’s extra sensitive. Those tiny graphite parts make it easier to feel when you get a bite.

What they’re not admired for is their looks. There’s a funny color scheme going on here with orange and red mixed together, but that’s what gives it its distinctive look – and name.

Ugly Stik has stayed on top of the game ever since it was first introduced in the mid-80’s. Everybody has their opinions, people will tell you this or that, but you can’t argue with those sales figures.

Rhino NightVision Rods – Light Up Your Evening

This is an innovative rod made by Zebco that lights up to help you see what you’re catching when you’re night fishing. There is a tiny light at the end of the rod so you can see where you’re dropping your line, and there’s also a bigger light at the butt of the rod so you can see what you’re doing there. These are the most important places to keep a light on when you’re fishing at night.

The lights will last up to 40 hours before you have to change the battery. For some of us, that means about 2 nights of fishing. They take simple AA batteries that go into a little compartment with a waterproof seal. It’s a handy little invention.

Rhino is known for rods that are sensitive and durable as well, so a NightVision rod can be used at any time of day or night.

St. Croix – The Connoisseur’s Fishing Rod

If you’ve been fishing for a while and you’re ready to spend a little money and get a great rod, anything made by St. Croix is great. St. Croix is known for their classy rods that are highly sensitive, light and made durable. They use cork on the handles so that you can feel it when the fish bite. They are also preferred over other rod models because they are strong without being heavy. This is because of their high quality standards.

The only problem with St. Croix rods is that they are pricey. You won’t pick one up for $ 20 or $ 30. You can expect to pay more like $ 200 or $ 300. No, I didn’t hit the 0 key too many times. That’s how much they run. St. Croix’s are used by serious sportsmen, and once you use one, you’ll feel the difference and keep wanting your own until you can convince your wife to let you buy it.

Catfish Fishing Pole – Types and Reviews

Does it matter what type of catfish fishing pole you are using? Some may tell you no, but that depends on your skill, your location and the fish you are after. The fact is, there are benefits of several types available to you when you take advantage of the right fishing pole. A pole designed for catfish is designed to give you the best results possible. Here’s what you need to know.

There are a wide variety of rods with which you may catch catfish very effectively. The choices should be based on factors such as cost, where you will be fishing, your size and capabilities, personal preference, and how much you will be using your pole. Anything from your classic cane pole to sophisticated and expensive rod and reel outfits may be used to fish for catfish.

Fishing poles are classically made of fiberglass or bamboo, but some really great poles have recently been made of graphite. Bamboo rods may be superb hand made fly fishing rods, simple cane poles without reels, or anything in between. Fiberglass poles are very popular with most novice fishermen. They are comparatively low cost, they require very little upkeep, and they are not easily broken.

They are probably the most popular type of fishing pole available, especially for the novice. Graphite has become an exceptionally popular pole. The biggest selling point for graphite is that it is so strong that it rarely breaks. It requires next to no maintenance, and it is very light.

It is largely a matter of personal preference, but if you are armed with a few suggestions and a little bit of information, you will be one very big step closer to choosing the pole that is right for you, and will provide a quality catfishing experience for you.

Sturdy rods that are shorter in length are usually used for trolling and bigger fish. Longer poles are helpful if you need to cast your line longer distances. Be sure you can handle the size of rod you choose, because if your rod is too long for you to be comfortable when you handle it, you will tire, and your fishing experience will not be satisfying. Since catfish tend to be large, if you only intend to have one pole, opt for a shorter, sturdier rod.

Some really popular poles with which to catch catfish are Shakespeare Ugly sticks, which are extremely popular and come in a variety of styles and sizes. For fishing the bank, Catfish getters are state of the art. Made of fiberglass, this new lightweight pole comes with line, sinker, swivel, and hook. They are specially designed to stick the end of the pole into the ground or affix to trees or logs, and fishing is a snap! These poles are not only light weight, they are quite visible even at night!

Another quality pole that deserves to be mentioned by name is the Quantum Big Cat. Anytime you are out to catch large fish, be it cat or any other type, or if you are fishing in rivers with strong currents, these big cat rods really do a great job. Big Cats are available in three different types. There is a heavy, a medium heavy, and a medium strength.

Each one of these is seven and a half feet long. They all have cork handles and many other amenities including the fact that they are sturdy enough to handle really big fish and saltwater. These catfish worthy rods are surely among the most well respected rods on the market, and they are priced quite nicely at about $ 40 each. For spin anglers, there is even a spinning type of Big Cat available!

What Catfish Fishing Hook Do You Choose?

Fishing for catfish can be one of the most exciting types of fishing you can do, but there really are some monster cats out there, so knowing how to select the right catfish hooks for the job is of major importance.

Depending on where you plan to fish, and whether you are out to catch basic table cats or huge monster cat, you will want to adjust the type of hook you plan to use. The good news is that there are some outstanding quality products available to help you nail the catfish you are after.

Keep an assortment with you while fishing, so you can change out the hooks to better fit the size of fish you are getting.

If you are fishing for table fish, and having a problem with the catfish taking your bait, running with it for a short distance before just simply dropping the bait, you might want to switch to a smaller hook like a 1/0 baitholder. This usually hangs in there a bit better, and will help you bring some table fare to the table for dinner. Of course, it is not as effective when you want to catch really big catfish.

If you are in a position where you need to cast out a long distance, you can always use a 2/0 octopus. This hook will work very well with a balsa wood and lead float called a Livingston Float. When you cast with this rig, it will really get out there! So, for casting long distances, try the 2/0 octopus.

When it comes to winter fishing for catfish, you really can get better results using smaller hooks too. Even when you are trying to catch big fish. Especially in the winter, when the water is cold and calm, the catfish tend to be finicky, and you have to try to get them out of the water without spooking them.

If you use anything bigger than a 2/0 hook, you will probably get bites, but the tendency is for the cat to spook and drop your hook like it was hot! This is particularly true in heavily fished waters, so no matter where you are fishing…lakes, rivers, ponds, etc. when getting bites is not the problem, just remember that you can always substitute a smaller, strong hook, and probably solve the problem.

In the springtime, when the fish are not so finicky, you can move up to some bigger hooks like a 6/0 baitholder hook. These are particularly good when there are flood water kinds of conditions present. During flood conditions, the fish tend to get very aggressive, and they really grab on to basically whatever is out there. You will miss some fish you could catch if you use the smaller hooks in flood conditions.

Another consideration is using the right size hook for whatever bait you are using. Generally speaking, bigger bait catches bigger fish; smaller bait catches smaller fish. The best hook, in my opinion, for catching catfish using shad head for bait is a 1/0 or 2/0 L042. For general use, you will most likely be satisfied with a 3/0 baitholder. While others will work well, it is best to consider this first.
